A sexless marriage is a marital union in which little or no sexual activity occurs between the two spouses. The definition of a non-sexual marriage is often broadened to include those where sexual intimacy occurs fewer than ten times per year, in which case 20 percent of the couples in the National Health and Social Life Survey would be in the category. Newsweek magazine estimates that 15 to 20 percent of couples are in a sexless relationship.
While there are certainly some couples who are able to maintain a rock-solid sex life, getting down at least a few days a week every week, most long-term relationships and marriages experience periods where couples have less sex. Life is busy, and dips are natural. There is, however, one important caveat: While quantity of sex will likely drop, the quality should increase.
Think back to those hungry, lusty days in your early relationship. For those in long term relationships, the difference between your sex life then and now may feel stark. It may even cause you to wonder if your relationship is ultimately doomed. Sanam Hafeeza clinical psychologist based in New York City.
Physical intimacy is what makes a relationship more than just a platonic friendship. Some couples fall into a negative pattern or habit of letting the physical part of the marriage fall by the wayside. According to Japanese law, foreign nationals married to Japanese in heterosexual marriages are granted long-term residence status upon arrival in Japan, but those in same-sex marriages are not. Though nearly two dozen Japanese cities, towns and wards issue certificates recognizing same-sex partnerships, they lack legal standing. In many traditions and statutes of civil or religious law, the consummation of a marriageoften called simply consummationis the first or first officially credited act of sexual intercourse between two people, either following their marriage to each other or after a prolonged romantic attraction. The definition of consummation usually refers to penile-vaginal sexual penetration, but some religious doctrines hold that there is an additional requirement that there must not be any contraception used. The religious, cultural, or legal significance of consummation may arise from theories of marriage as having the purpose of producing legally recognized descendants of the partners, or of providing sanction to their sexual acts together, or both, and its absence may amount to treating a marriage ceremony as falling short of completing the state of being married, or as creating a marriage which may later be repudiated.
